Tŷ Hyll access statement

Tŷ Hyll / The Ugly House is an historic Grade II Listed building, dating back at least to Victorian times. We offer a very warm welcome to all visitors and have done our very best to provide wheelchair access within the constraints of a very steep site and a listed building.

Considerable refurbishment work in 2012 has significantly improved access to the house, although visitors must be aware that there is some rough terrain and uneven ground.

The tearoom on the ground floor of the house is accessible via a ramp or steps. From the wide main door there is level access throughout the tearoom. Table service is provided. As space in this tiny building is inevitably limited, we strongly recommend that wheelchair users contact us in advance in order that we can move some furniture. It is possible to reserve tables in the tearoom, this will help us to make your visit a more pleasurable one.

There is a wheelchair-accessible toilet at the rear of the building, available for disabled visitors to the tearoom and the grounds. Visitors should ask tearoom staff for a key to use this facility. A Radar lock will be fitted in the near future. The composting toilet accessible for more mobile visitors to the house and grounds is separate from the house and located above the wildlife garden. It is reached by a graded 900mm wide path, although it must be noted that the path passes through rough terrain and has two short steep sections.

Our honeybee exhibition is on the upper floor of the cottage and we regret that, due to the constraints of space and refurbishment possibilities in this listed building, access is via a flight of narrow stairs. Information leaflets about the garden and our honeybees are available on the ground floor of the house, and through our website www.theuglyhouse.co.uk

We welcome assistance dogs in all areas of the house and grounds. A bowl of water can be provided on request.

Access to the house and grounds is through two entrances – the main entrance on the corner of the A5 and the minor road leading up the side of the property, and one approximately 10 metres further up this minor road. The main entrance is not wheelchair accessible and may be difficult for visitors with limited mobility as there are three uneven slate steps. The second entrance is wheelchair accessible and can be accessed by a ramp leading from the Blue Badge parking in the upper car park, although visitors do have to cross diagonally the minor road which has a steep cross-fall gradient. If you require assistance, please ensure that you call us in advance of your visit and the tearoom staff will be happy to help.

Visitors with limited mobility are advised to park in the upper car park and access the house via the ramp if required. Visitors who do not wish to use the ramp are advised to park in the lower car park. There is one parking space reserved for Blue Badge holders in the upper car park adjacent to the ramp.

If you have any questions as to how we can help you further, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to help you to plan your visit. Telephone us on 01492 642322.
