Understanding Dormice – Theory and Practice

Checking a dormouse box at Tŷ Hyll

A perfect opportunity to learn more about the Hazel Dormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius)!

The hazel dormouse has a golden coat, large black eyes and a furry tail that’s 80{cfe7b007ef2d97d6c94c66bdf5fd69182957ee376eb8b20ce6b541889da3df98} of its own body length! Though, being nocturnal and brilliant climbers, these small mammals are rarely ever seen! With numbers in decline and having a rare and vulnerable to extinction conservation status, this is the perfect opportunity to find out more about these beautiful creatures. Led by Becky Clews-Roberts, this day will consist of an introduction to the Hazel Dormouse covering a wide range of their natural history, and a practical session after lunch. The practical session will be outdoors in a near-by woodland where Becky will demonstrate how to carry out dormouse box checks, so please bring suitable footwear and clothing! Spaces on this day are limited and therefore booking is essential.
