A field day exploring how Darwin’s visits to north Wales and Patagonia led him to the realisation that Snowdonia had once been glaciated.

Charles Darwin’s developing ideas about glaciations and geology were a key part of his insights into the evolution of species. This field-day with Paul Gannon, a Snowdonia Society Trustee, will explore Darwin’s work in Cwm Idwal. We will look at how Darwin’s ideas on geology and glaciation evolved and seek out evidence he identified on the ground in Cwm Idwal.

Moderate terrain with some ascent and descent on stony paths and sections off path. 3 miles, total.

Suggested minimum donation £7.50 for members, £15 for non-members.

Paul Gannon is a science and technology writer with a special interest in geosciences and environmental issues. He is author of the ‘Rock Trails’ hillwalkers’ guides to geology and scenery in Britain, including Rock Trails Snowdonia, now in its 2nd edition. Paul is a mountain leader and organises geology walks. He looks to sustainable solutions to global warming, and hopes the Snowdonia Society can play a role in that. See Paul Gannon Books for information about Paul’s publications.
