Should art be constrained by landscape?

A public debate

Anthony Garratt’s floating art installation on Llyn Llydaw, beneath Snowdon’s summit, attracted media attention and controversy earlier this year.

In National Parks planning controls exist to conserve the ‘natural beauty’ of these protected landscapes, but artworks such as this are not always subject to such regulation.

The motion

‘This house considers that public art and arts related installations should not be subjected to any further development controls.’

Seconder: Rob Collister – international mountain guide and writer on environmental matters.

Chair: Dr Peter Wakelin – an art historian, curator, and conservationist who has worked with Cadw and as Secretary of the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales.
