Volunteering: Something for everyone

‘Volunteering for Cymdeithas Eryri is one of the most rewarding things you can experience here in north Wales. Since starting back in December 2022 I’ve been on numerous days, gaining multiple skills and new experiences.’

Fay has extensive experience as a Snowdonia Society volunteer. Hear from her what it’s like to be out with staff and fellow volunteers, helping to protect the landscapes.

‘What makes it unique as a volunteering organisation is the way it’s set up for volunteers; we can log onto the My Impact volunteer dashboard, see what’s coming up, then pick and choose specific days that suit our time schedule. You can also easily cancel through the website if you can’t make it for any reason. What’s great as well is that the activities are inclusive to people from different fitness levels. Ranging from strenuous through to easy, anyone can volunteer if they want – there is something for all generations to enjoy.

Apart from the website set up, you also have multiple organisations working together to give a variety of activities to get involved in. This means you’ll never have to do the same thing every week; you can try something and if it’s not for you, you can then move on to something else. It’s a brilliant system and I think that’s why it’s so successful. With every new activity you try, you’re gaining knowledge and skills that you can use in other areas of your life.

Saying that, one of the best things about volunteering is the people. I’ve never met such a lovely, dedicated and down to earth group of workers and volunteers in one place. Volunteering has given me an opportunity to meet people from all sorts of backgrounds but we all have one thing in common – our love for conservation and the outdoors.

It’s been really great for my children to get involved in beach cleans and the Make a Difference (MaD) weekend. The organisers really made an effort to give the children educational and fun experiences with things like seed collecting, tree identification and even a magical storytelling walk. I really want to pass on my passion for conservation and appreciating nature to my children, and we’re very lucky to be so close to the National park which I personally feel very connected to.

I feel that Cymdeithas Eryri is one of the best ways to inspire the younger generation, giving them educational opportunities but also unforgettable experiences.’

Fay has been volunteering with Snowdonia Society since 2022 and is currently taking a break for health reasons.
