Upskilling a green generation

With climate anxiety on the rise, there has never been a
more important time to involve young people in conservation. We provide practical conservation volunteering opportunities all over Eryri and offer accredited training to help empower people to make a difference in their local environment.

The climate crisis is causing people to feel helpless and frustrated. They see their environment rapidly changing and feel powerless to stop it. For instance, invasive species such as Himalayan Balsam are spreading and threatening the native biodiversity, while the increased number of visitors is putting pressure on the footpaths and facilities in Eryri National Park. Many who are passionate about conservation struggle to enter the sector. They encounter obstacles such as lack of experience, qualifications, or connections.

We want to change this by:

  • Delivering strategic, well organised and bilingual practical action to help tackle some of the most prevalent challenges in Eryri.
  • Offering free training opportunities for our volunteers, including first aid, accredited training in footpath maintenance, leader training and more.
  • Increasing the number of young people involved in our projects, through work with schools, colleges, work experience placements and real living wage paid traineeships.

We believe that education is a key factor in raising awareness and inspiring action for the environment. That is why we work closely with primary and secondary schools, universities, and colleges in Eryri and beyond. We offer practical outdoor learning sessions, covering topics such as biodiversity, sustainability and conservation. Our aim is to provide students with the knowledge, skills and motivation to become green leaders in their communities and careers. By working with the education sector, we hope to upskill a green generation that will shape a better future for our planet.

Besides conserving the landscape and habitat, our work also makes a great difference to the people and community in the area. By involving volunteers in our projects, we empower them to take ownership of their environment and foster a sense of pride and responsibility.

Volunteers will:

  • Have the opportunity to gain transferable skills
  • Benefit from mixing with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Feel part of a community
  • Have improved physical & mental wellbeing

If you’re a teacher/ educator who’d like to organise a group session for your pupils or staff please contact iwan@snowdonia-society.org.uk for more information.
